“Family across Racial Boundaries in Nineteenth- Century North Carolina”

Warren E. Milteer, Jr. Local beliefs and legal edicts attempted to discourage sexual and familial relationships between women of color and white men in North Carolina. However, free women of mixed ancestry and white men developed relationships that mimicked legally-sanctioned marriages. These unions often produced children who maintained frequent interaction with both parents. Dr.Milteer discusses how free women of mixed ancestry and their white partners in nineteenth-century Hertford County, North Carolina dealt with the legal limitations inherent in their situation. Men in these relationships found ways to secure property rights for women and children and developed methods to prevent legal scrutiny of their living arrangements.  This discussion is based on research by Dr.Milteer that is published in the Journal of Social History (Spring 2014), published by Oxford University Press.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM

“North Carolina Descendants of the First Child of African Descent Born in America:  William Tucker, 1624”

William Tucker was the first person of African ancestry born in the 13 British Colonies.  His birth symbolized the beginnings of a distinct African American identity along the eastern coast of what would eventually become the United States. William Tucker was born in 1624 near Jamestown, Virginia, the son of “Antoney and Isabell,” two African indentured servants of Captain William Tucker. Shelton Tucker will present a timeline that documents William Tucker’s descendants’ migration from what is now Hampton, Virginia to what is now Nash County North Carolina. He will also document William Tucker’s connection to the Tucker and Bell families of England.  Shelton Tucker is a graduate of Tennessee State University’s Meharry Medical School with a BS degree in Health Administration and Planning.  He received his Master of Business Administration degree from Clark Atlanta University. He is a Financial Advisor of William A Tucker Enterprises LLC for Chicago, London, and Coca-Cola Africa.
