Digging History! 2005 History
Summer Day Camp

2005 Summer Camp

Twenty-five campers took part in this year's History and Heritage Summer Day Camp, July 18-22. Activities included archaeology, bread-making, and playing a game of rounders, an 18th-C. precursor to baseball. Local fourth to eighth graders learned about fossils, beekeeping, wildlife, and made clay bowls, fish-print t-shirts and other crafts and also took a trip to Historic Murfreesboro. See more pictures from camp.

Exhibit Continues through Sept. 26

What Was It Worth Back Then?  A new temporary exhibit, "Material Wealth in Bertie County" answers that question by comparing goods on estate inventories in 1753, 1787, 1797, and 1819. To learn more about these artifacts and the people that used them, come to one of the gallery talks on the schedule below.

Home Brew Coming This Fall:  Like many wealthy planters, David Stone operated a still and brewed some the strong drink consumed at Hope Plantation. "Home Brew: Domestic Alcohol Production in Bertie County from the 19th to the 20th Century" will look at how home brew turned to bootlegging in eastern North Carolina over the course of nearly 200 years. If you or someone you know would like to participate in the oral history component of this exhibit, please contact
Glenn Perkins.
