African American Celebration Saturday,
February 4

Bertie County’s
Agricultural Legacy is the theme of the 2006 African
American Celebration at Historic Hope, this Saturday, February
4.
The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. with students from
Colerain Elementary School and Weldon
Elementary presenting their classes’ Black History Month
programs.
At 12:30 p.m., Hope will host a forum with
P.E. Bazemore and Carl Hodges,
leaders in the fight to acquire pay equity and benefits for African
American extension agents in North Carolina. Mr. Bazemore and
Mr. Hodges will discuss the history of African American farmers from
the 1860s all the way to present day.
The Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church
choir will also perform traditional hymns and spirituals.
All events are free and open to the
public and will be held in the Roanoke-Chowan Heritage
Center at Hope Plantation. For more information, contact

Saturday, April 8: Elizabeth Stevenson Ives
Lectures Domestic Textiles Connecting Women Across Cultures.
Speakers include Kathleen Staples, textile scholar, who
will talk about "Colonial and Antebellum Girlhood Embroidery in North
Carolina," and Colleen Kriger, professor of history at
UNC Greensboro, discussing "West African Textiles, Indigo, and Women's
Cultural Identity in the African Diaspora." Plan on joining us for the
10th year of this distinguished decorative arts lecture series. Check
